The Azerbaijani First League is the second highest professional league in Azerbaijani professional football. The department is led by the AFFA.

The First Division currently consists of 14 teams. All teams play twice against each other.

Sabail was promoted from the 2016/17 season in the Azerbaijani Premier League, while Shuvalan relegated to the First Division. On September 25, 2017, it was announced that Bine, Khazar Baku and Sabah will participate in the First Division.

Shamkir, Shahdag, Sharurspor, Energetik, Bakılı, Ravan Baku and Göyazan did not participate this season.

Ravan Baku: The club was founded in 2009. In May 2011, the team secured promotion to the Azerbaijan Premier League, after they had taken second place in the first division of Azerbaijan.

In the debut of the club in the 2011/12 season, Ravan finished in the Azerbaijani Premier League eighth place, the highest league finish of all time. After the season, the club repeated his record and was again eighth. In 2013, Ravan's property was heavily criticized by local media, football professionals and fans for hiring and dismissing managers so often. Ravan officially stepped down on May 17, 2014 after beating Baku 2-2.
