Football is played in Canada according to the rules of club football. What is today called football in Canada was widely known in the early days of sports in Canada as football, as it is known throughout much of the world today.
The British Columbia Football Association was the first provincial football association founded in Canada in 1891. It was followed in 1896 by the Manitoba Football Association, 1901 the Ontario Football Association, 1906 Saskatchewan Football Association, 1909 the Alberta Football Association and 1911 the Province of Quebec Football Association.
The Dominion of Canada Football Association was founded in 1912. The game's governing body kept that name until it was changed to The Football Association of Canada on June 6, 1952. The association changed its name later in the Canadian Soccer Football Association in 1958 and finally in 1971 at the Canadian Football Association.
One of the earliest football matches was played in 1859 in Toronto between the St. George's Society and an Irish team. The games were held in 1862 in New Westminster and 1865 in Victoria. The first modern-day game took place in Toronto in 1876, whereupon the Dominion Football Association, the first registered football association outside the British Isles, was founded in Toronto in 1877 to promote competition between local sides. The first football book published in Canada was published on March 5, 1879 in Toronto.
In 1880, the Western Football Association was founded in Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario, and played an important role in the further development of the sport throughout Southern Ontario. In the early 1900's, the WFA had teams across West Ontario in several communities, including Seaforth, Mildmay, Listowel, Woodstock, Ingersoll, Brussels, Dundas, Aylmer, Ayr, Tavistock, Preston, Galt, and Berlin.
In 1885 and 1886, the Western Football Association sent teams to New Jersey to play both indoor and outdoor games against teams representing the American Football Association, then the unofficial football body in the United States. In the first unofficial international between the two countries in 1885, Canada defeated the United States 1-0 in East Newark, New Jersey. A year later, the American side won 3-2 in the same field. In the following years, teams from both organizations played regularly on both sides of the border against each other.
In 1896, the Manitoba Football Association was founded on March 19 in Brandon.
