In modern times, club football was presented to the Greeks by overseas British communities and military personnel. The first Greek football teams were founded at the beginning of the 20th century in sports and gymnastics clubs in the major port cities of Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as in the large Greek communities of the Ottoman Empire, such as Constantinople and Smyrna. The only Greek team to reach the final of a UEFA competition is Panathinaikos, who finished second in the European Cup in 1970/71.
