The Ligue 2 was founded a year after the founding of the first league in 1933 under the name Division 2 and has since been the second division of French football. The name lasted until 2002, before it was changed to the current name. As the league is part of the LFP, clubs that are on the verge of professionalism can do so. However, if a club descends to the Championnat National, its professional status may be temporarily revoked until it returns to Ligue 2.
