The league has always been dominated by teams located south of Dibete or in the south of the country until Ecco City Greens became the first team from the north to write history in the 2006/07 season, winning the lucrative competition. The league is sponsored by a mobile operator Be Mobile with 30 million Pula. After the ABSA premiere in South Africa, the Be Mobile league is the second highest sponsored league in the COSAFA region. The league has continued to grow by leaps and bounds, as demonstrated by the increasing number of foreign players in the BPL. Some top players from mainly Zimbabwe like Arnold Chaka, Master Masitara, Elvis Meleka, Mandla Sibanda, Sageby Sandaka and Tendai Ndoro have dropped the Zimbabwean PSL for the BPL in recent years. Recently, Namibian stars like Jerome Luis and Benson Shilongo came to Botswana in search of the Pula. Following the completion of its television business with a South African company, RP Productions, the league is currently negotiating a long-term deal with Supersport International. At the beginning of 2013, pay-TV was testing five BPL games.
During the league from August to May each club plays twice against the other teams. Once at home and once abroad, a total of 30 games per team until the end of the season. Therefore, a true round-robin format is used in Botswana football. In the first half of the season each team plays once against each league opponent, so a total of 15 games. In the second half of the season, the teams play in exactly the same order as in the first half of the season. The only difference is that the situation is changed at home and abroad. Since the 1994/95 season, the teams received three points for a win, a point for a draw and no points for a defeat. Since Botswana has only a low rank in the CAF rankings, only one CAF Champions League seat will be awarded to the league champions. The cup winners receive a seat in the CAF Confederation Cup.
