Czech professional football league

The Czech First League, which is known for sponsorship reasons as Fortuna League, is a Czech professional league for football clubs. At the top of the Czech football league system is the country's most important football competition. It is contested by 16 clubs that operate a promotion and relegation system with the Czech National Football League. Since the season 2018/19, the seasons last from July to May and the teams each play 30 games. Then the teams are divided into three groups that play out end position setups. The league is currently ranked 13th in Europe in the UEFA league table.

The history of the Czech Football League began at the end of the 20th century. It was reorganized for the 1993-1994 season following the dissolution of the former Czechoslovakia and thus the Czechoslovak League. With twelve league titles Sparta Prague is the most successful team in the history of the Czech First League. Other clubs that have won the title are Slavia Prague, Slovan Liberec, Banik Ostrava and Viktoria Plzeň.

There are 16 clubs in the league. During a season that lasts from August to May, each club plays twice, once in the home stadium and once in the stadium of the opponent, a total of 30 games. In the opening season, two points were awarded for a win, before three points were awarded in 1994 for a victory. The teams receive one point for a draw and no points are awarded for a defeat. The teams are scored according to the total score. If two or more teams finish with equal points, the points in the relevant matches, the goal difference and the goals scored will be counted against the head-to-head record between the teams. The two lowest placed teams descend to the second league (Czech National Football League).

Changes from 2018: 2018-19 season was the first season played with the new competition format. After a regular season, which lasts from July to April and after the same key as in the preseason is played, the teams are divided into three groups. The top six regular season teams enter the championship group, with the first placed team winning the championship of the Czech Republic. The teams play only once against each other and have a total of 5 games. Earned points are added to the points of the regular season.

The teams from place 7 to 10 of the regular season take part in the play-offs of the Europa League. The best of them play against the fourth or fifth (this depends on the result of the Czech Cup and the Czech coefficients between the European football leagues) of the championship group to determine who will participate in the Europa League.

The teams from position 11 to 16 in the regular season play the same key as the championship group. The 16th-placed team will be relegated directly to the Czech Football Nationalliga, while the teams will play in the 15th and 14th places in the relegation play-off against the 2nd and 3rd teams of the Czech Football Nationalliga.
