In the 1870s, just before the start of the struggle for Africa, a European exploration of the Congo Basin was first conducted by Henry Morton Stanley under the patronage of Leopold II of Belgium. In 1885, Leopold formally acquired the rights to the Congo territory at the Berlin Conference and made the land his private property. During the Free State, its colonial military force, the Force Publique, forced the local population to produce rubber. From 1885 to 1908, millions of Congo died as a result of illness and exploitation.
