Kakkonen or II Divisioona is the third tier in the Finnish league system

Kakkonen or II Divisioona is the third tier in the Finnish league system and comprises 36 Finnish football teams. The II Divisioona was introduced in 1973 and became known as Kakkonen in the mid-1990s. (Finnish for 'number two', Swedish: Tvåan). Sakari Tukiainen finished the 2014 season as the best scorer and set with 40 goals for the Kakkonen a new league record. Petter Meyer finished 2015 as the top scorer for GrIFK with 23 goals

For the 2012 season, the format of the Kakkonen was changed, the league was divided into 4 groups of 10 teams, each representing a geographical area. Each club plays three times in the same group. The clubs receive three points for a win, one for a draw and no for a defeat. The group winners can win the promotion to Ykkönen, while two lower clubs of each group and the weakest club descend with eighth place to Kolmonen.

For the 2016 season, the format of the Kakkonen was changed, the league was divided into 3 groups of 12 teams. Each club plays twice against the others in its group. The group winners and the best team with second place have the chance to win after a playoff with four teams one of two promotion slots for Ykkönen. The bottom three teams of each group 10, 11 and 12 will descend to Kolmonen.

The Finnish national team played in 1911 their first international match against Sweden. At that time Finland was still a part of the Russian Grand Duchy and became independent in 1917. Finland has taken part in several Olympic Games and finished fourth in 1912, but has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup or the UEFA European Championship.

The Finnish Football Association also organizes national U19 and U21 teams.

The Finnish national women's football team celebrated their competitive debut in 1984 in qualifying for women's football. Their most successful competition so far was UEFA Women's Euro 2005, where they reached the semi-finals.
