The Black Stars team is one of the highest rated national football teams in Africa. Ghana has won the African Nations Cup four times. They also reached the last 16 of the 2006 FIFA World Cup before being eliminated from Brazil. At the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, they reached the quarter-finals of the Football World Cup as the third African team in history. Former Black Star national team members such as Sulley Muntari, Michael Essien, John Mensah and Captain Stephen Appiah participated in these youth tournaments.

The Ghanaian national football team represents Ghana since the 1950s in the international football association. The team is nicknamed "Black Stars" after "Black Star of Africa" in the flag of Ghana. It is managed by the Ghana Football Association, the umbrella organization for football in Ghana and the oldest football association in Africa (founded in 1920). Before 1957, the team played as Gold Coast.
Although the team qualified for the senior FIFA World Cup for the first time in 2006, they qualified for four Olympic football tournaments when the tournament was still a full competition for the seniors' national team. Their best performance was the third place at the 1992 Summer Olympics. The team has won the African Nations Cup four times (1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982) and was vice-champion five times (1968, 1970, 1992, 2010 and 2015). After being unbeaten in 2005, the Ghanaian national football team won the award for Best Mover of the Year and reached the second round of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. At the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, they reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup as the third African team and started in 2014 for their third World Series in a row.
