Football is the most popular sport in Greece, followed by basketball.
The ancient Greeks have known many ball games played, some of which included the use of the feet. It is believed that the Roman Wildharpasta comes from a Greek team game known as (Episkyros) or (Phaininda) after the Christian theologian Clemens of Alexandria (around 150-215 AD). These games seem to resemble rugby football.

In modern times, club football was presented to the Greeks by overseas British communities and military personnel. The first Greek football teams were founded at the beginning of the 20th century in sports and gymnastics clubs in the major port cities of Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as in the large Greek communities of the Ottoman Empire, such as Constantinople and Smyrna. After the catastrophe of Asia Minor in 1922, which led to a large resettlement of Greeks from Turkey to Greece, several associations like Panionios G.S.S. and Apollon Smyrni F.C. were transplanted while many athletes from other clubs such as Pera founded new organizations in their new home (eg AEK, PAOK).
The first league of professional football in Greece was officially founded in 1927 as a Panhellenic championship. The league ran until 1959 and was then replaced by the Alpha Ethniki, which ran until 2006 and was then replaced by the Superleague Greece. According to FIFPro, an organization representing professional players, in 2011, nearly 70 percent of gamblers complained in a poll about not getting paid.
The Superleague Greece is the top professional football division in Greece. The league consists of 16 clubs, with the winners of the league becoming the champions of Greece. The team with the most national championships is Olympiacos, which has won 42 times - 8 Super League titles, 19 Alpha Ethniki titles and 15 Panhellenic championships. Two more P.O.K. Clubs also dominate the history of Greek football; Panathinaikos with 20 titles and AEK Athens with 12 titles.
At the end of the season, the two lowest clubs in the Super League in the Football League from and will be replaced by teams from this league. Below the football league, the league structure is regionalized, with four groups form Gamma Ethniki and many local championships are one level lower.
Club members can qualify for European tournaments for which UEFA is responsible. The Super League champions qualify for the group stage of the Uefa Champions league football the following season. The teams, who finish in second to fifth place, qualify for a round-robin playoff, the winner of which enters the Champions League in the third qualifying round. The other three teams will qualify for the next season's UEFA Europa League in the playoff, third qualifying or second qualifying round, depending on their performance in the playoffs at national level. The winner of the Greek Cup also qualifies for the Europa League. If this club has already qualified for a UEFA competition, the runner-up gets the place.
The only Greek team to reach the final of a UEFA competition is Panathinaikos, who finished second in the European Cup in 1970/71.
