U-19 football team qualified for the finals of EURO

After eleven years, the Hungarian U-19 football team qualified for the finals of EURO U-19. In the first qualifying round, the team finished with three wins against Kazakhstan (6-0), Wales (3-1) and Switzerland (2-1) the first place in the group. After that, the second round was much more difficult, but as the host of the Group 2 games, the team played at home in Hungary and the atmosphere helped in times of need. The first match against Lithuania was a 2-2 draw, but in the last two games the team won 2-1 against Cyprus and 1-0 against Portugal. That was enough to qualify. Sándor Egervári, Hungary coach of the Under-20 national team, was named head coach of the senior national team prior to the European Championship qualifier, in which Hungary competed against Finland, Moldova, the Netherlands, San Marino and Sweden. Hungary won six games, drew and lost three games when they finished third in the group with 19 points. During the qualifying process, Hungary reached 27th place in the FIFA World Ranking in September 2011, the highest position it has ever held. At the end of the year, the Liechtenstein national team played in memory of the recently deceased Flórián Albert, the only Hungarian footballer to win the Ballon d'Or.

Hungary was drawn in the World Cup qualifier 2014 in Group D together with the Netherlands, Turkey, Romania, Estonia and Andorra. They collected 14 points in the penultimate round of the games, but suffered a shared national record defeat 8-1 against the Netherlands, which led to the resignation of head coach Sándor Egervári. In their last group game, a 2-0 victory against Andorra, Hungary, led coach József Csábi. They finished third with 17 points in the group and missed the qualification. After the game, striker Ádám Szalai held a press conference with a poignant monologue about his view that "our followers are constantly being lied to," assuming the team has a chance against current leaders in the world. Something similar has been said by midfielder Szabolcs Huszti earlier. During this time, a film crew began filming the team during the preparations and during the games. The film, Még 50 perc, was finally released in 2016 shortly before the 2016 European Championship.
