The División Intermedia, also known as Segunda División, is the second-rate football league in Paraguay. It is organized by the Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol.
Since 1910, the second league kidneys have changed rules, number of teams and names. From 2006 División Intermedia is the name for the second division and 16 teams are part of it. The champion and runner-up of this league gets the right to participate in the Liga Paraguaya: Primera División, the highest football league in Paraguay. The last three teams descend into the third division ("Primera de Ascenso" for teams from Gran Asunción and Primera División Nacional B for teams outside the Gran Asunción). The three places of the relegated are occupied with a team from the Primera de Ascenso and one from the Primera División Nacional B, a tournament in which teams from all over the country compete against each other and have the chance to rise in the first league.
The Paraguayan national football team is controlled by the Paraguayan Football Association (Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol) and represents Paraguay in international men's football competitions. Paraguay is a member of CONMEBOL. The Albirroja has qualified for eight FIFA World Cup competitions (1930, 1950, 1958, 1986, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010). Their best performance was achieved in 2010 with the entry into the quarter-finals. Paraguay, which regularly participates in the Copa América, was twice (1953 and 1979) awarded the winner of the competition. Paraguay's highest FIFA world ranking was 8th (March 2001) and its lowest was 103 (May 1995). Paraguay was awarded the second place for Best Promotion of the Year in 1996 for his promotion to the FIFA Ranking.
