The first Turkish football league was founded in 1904 as the Istanbul Football League. In many other cities such as Ankara, Izmir, Adana, Eskişehir, Edirne and Trabzon regional football leagues were founded. Before the introduction of the nationwide professional league, now known as the Süper Lig, there were two national championships at the highest level: the former Turkish Football Championship and the National Division.
