Venezuela on Copa América

Segunda División is the second tier of the Venezuelan football league system. The Venezuelan second division was founded in 1979.

Copa América story

Venezuela first appeared in the 1967 Copa América and finished fifth after beating Bolivia 3-0 against Mendoza and Santana. The 1975 tournament saw Venezuela pulled in a group with Brazil and Argentina, and finished the bottom with a 0-11 defeat by Argentina. In the 1979 edition, which would be the international Swansong for Mendoza and Santana, they drew 0-0 with Colombia and 1-1 with Chile. A highlight of the tournament in 1989 were the four goals of midfielder Carlos Maldonado. In the 1993 series, Venezuela moved with Uruguay and the United States.

The overall record of the Copa América was relatively poor (goal difference 33-145 ahead of the Copa America 2011), but the "eye Vinotinto" phase (Vinotinto Rise) in the early 2000s (decade) drew attention to the country's sport in turn brought with it increased support from both public and private institutions. This support contributed significantly to the quality improvement of the "Vinotinto". During the Copa América 2007 in Venezuela, the team reached the quarter-finals for the first time in its history, having taken first place in a group from Peru, Bolivia and Uruguay. Venezuela's 2-0 victory over Peru during the competition was the first Copa America victory since 1967.

2011 Copa América

At the 2011 Copa America Championship, Venezuela reached the semi-finals for the first time, defeating Chile 2-1 in the quarter-finals. Although Venezuela had an outstanding presence in the semi-final against Paraguay, it could not turn his chances into goals. In a penalty shoot-out, they would eventually lose 5-3 to Paraguay, after they were scoreless in normal and extra time. Venezuela and Peru played for third place in the Estadio Ciudad de La Plata, where Venezuela suffered the biggest defeat of the tournament, with 4: 1 lost to Peru and total fell to fourth place. Still, it was the best result they ever scored in this competition.
